When Columbine Never Ends

A week or so after they found that bag on the bench in Spokane, Kevin Parker, a Washington state representative in his second term, decided he would call a community meeting in Spokane so that the people there could discuss their concerns arising from the events around the march. The sheriff helped Parker organize it. Spokane is not in Parker's legislative district but, in what happened on January 17, Parker felt himself sliding into territory both dark and horribly recognizable.

On April 20, 1999, prior to moving to Washington, Parker was working in an outreach program aimed at high-school students in the Denver area. He was meeting a student for lunch that day in the cafeteria of Columbine High School in Littleton. Suddenly, there was a commotion in the hallway outside. Two students named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had begun the rampage that would end with 13 dead and with Columbine the most famous high school in the world, for a little while, anyway.

"You're trying to make sense of it all while it's all unfolding," Parker recalls. "There's gunfire. You hear a pipe bomb go off. Later, they told us we were only in the cafeteria for three or four minutes." Parker shoved the student he'd been counseling under a table. After those interminable three or four minutes, he hustled the students up a stairwell and out of the building. They ran down the street to another school that was being used as a temporary staging area for the students who had escaped. Parker saw SWAT teams running in the other direction. Then, the parents started showing up where the students were, looking for their children. At this point in the story, Kevin Parker stops talking for a moment.

It is never far from him. When Jared Loughner opened up on the crowd in Tucson not long before they found the bag on the bench, Parker went back to Columbine again....

Perry's first debate with the GOP field will be at Reagan Library

As an official presidential candidate, Rick Perry's first GOP debate since his announcement will be next month at the Reagan Library. It will be the first time the Texas governor shares the stage with the rest of the field in a debate format. Sponsors of the Sept. 7 debate say eight GOP hopefuls will be in attendance. Two days earlier, Perry will be part of South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint's candidate forum in South Carolina. And later in the month, Perry is slated to attend his second GOP debate in Florida.

In preparation, Perry and his political team have begun debate prep, running over questions in a mock debate format. The Reagan event will be Perry's first big test on stage with the rest of the field. The debate is being sponsored by the Reagan Foundation in conjunction with POLITICO and NBC News. They announced today that Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Perry plan to appear.

Be careful what you wish for

To think that elections used to be boring. Predictable.

Nick Clegg

Just like the general election held exactly a year ago - today produced results no-one predicted with consequences which are totally unpredictable.

Many may have foreseen the drubbing Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats would receive but few foresaw its scale - losing not just to Labour in the Northern cities, not just to the SNP in Scotland but - irony of ironies - to their coalition partners the Conservatives in parts of the South.

And who would have dared predict that David Cameron would be out tonight celebrating councils and councillors gained - if, that is, he hadn't decreed that his party must not be seen to gloat.

And all this before the final results of a referendum which looks certain to bring suppressed grins to Tory faces and further gloom to Liberal Democrats.

So what now for the coalition? The talk is of a more business-like, less chummy relationship; of some disagreements publicly aired rather than always privately resolved; of Liberal Democrats fighting - their chosen word - to avoid what Nick Clegg called this morning "a return to Thatcherism".

How will that work? No-one can possibly know. Just as no-one can know how the new Scottish government will manage with a parliamentary majority committed to delivering independence whilst public opinion shows no appetite for it.

David Cameron and Alex Salmond are the two clear winners of today but they may soon be pondering that old Chinese proverb - be careful what you wish for.
